3 Family Fun Activities for a Weekend in Washington, DC
Summer is my favorite time of year! Who doesn’t like the warm weather, long nights, and of course family vacations? This summer, I got a chance to take my son, to Washington DC. We went for an extended weekend to visit family, and to see what the nation’s capital had to offer.
My top priority during this trip was to stay on budget and to find activities that my six-year-old would actually enjoy. I can proudly say, we both had a great time.
From one mama to another, here are my top three family fun activities for a weekend in Washington, DC:
I never knew just how many museums were in DC, and the best part is, most are totally free! The lines can be pretty long, so I suggested going early or later in the day. Also, parking can be a nightmare, so take an Uber or plan accordingly.
My son’s favorite museum was the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. He thought the animals were so cool. This museum is very kid friendly. There are movies and interactive games throughout the exhibits that keep your attention. My favorite part of this museum (and really all the museums) is that it contributes to summer learning.
A few must-see exhibits in this museum are: the Neanderthal, Live Coral Reef, African Elephant & Other Mammals.
The list of museums in DC are endless, but here our my top picks for the whole family:
2. Take a Monument Tour
One great way to see Washington DC’s top attractions is by using a tour bus. They are everywhere and usually affordable. With a narrated guide, your family will journey to Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, the White House, U.S. Capitol, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, the Supreme Court and many more places. These tour buses are great if you want to take a break from walking and get some Instagram-able shots. Fortunately I was able to see many of the monuments at night and that is a spectacular view.
3. Make it to the Beach
Since I have family in Washington, DC the beach was an absolute must! And to my surprise there are so many to choose from that are less than three hours away. We choose to visit Rehobth Beach, in Delaware. It’s not the most popular beach in the NJ/MD/DC area, but it's perfect for families. This beach features many eateries, local shops, hotels, and of a carnival with games and rides for all ages. My son didn’t want to leave this beach.
Have you taken your family to Washington, DC, if so what did you most enjoy?
