How to Get Back to the Grind: School & Work & More

It’s time to switch gears and get back into your routines, whether that be for work, school or a new endeavor.  Here are my top six helpful tips to get you back into the swing of things.

Create a Routine

Creating a routine that you can stick with is the key to consistency! I have failed miserably at this many times as I’ve tried to discover what routine(s) work best for my lifestyle. Whether that be my diet, fitness routine, sleep habits, study habits, family time, church, or self-care. We are all pulled in so many directions, interchanging the many hats that we wear. So it’s important that you map out what’s most important to you. Determine your “non-negotiables” is what I call them, and faithfully stick to them. You will see a dramatic change in how you feel and how your days, weeks and months unfold. Choose wisely your priorities and boundaries because they will determine your success!

Find a few accountability buddies for each endeavor. Create calendar reminders for every deadline or goal you are setting (find an app that keeps your life organized), and be honest about your intentions and capabilities for achieving the goals and tasks ahead (basically be realistic with yourself).  At one point in my life I said yes to everything, and sometimes I still struggle with that. But you have to step back, look at your priorities and decide if those align with the goals. It’s nothing personal, but you have to stay focused. You can’t pour from an empty cup!

You know more than you think

Stop second guessing yourself when it comes to your abilities. Why? Because you have already done it before, or you have encountered a similar situation where you survived, overcame, learned or pushed through to the other side. You are resilient which means you can tackle whatever is on your long list of To-Dos!

Time to Start

One of the most challenging things to starting something new or getting back into the swing of things is the idea that you have more time. Well, you don’t actually! Stop procrastinating. Start today, no matter how small, start tearing away at the mountain of tasks, piece by piece. Think of it like this. If you're building a house, you don’t just wake up one morning and say “new home show yourself to me.” You envision the home first, you design it, you buy all the materials, you begin to build stone by stone and then over time Wahala! Your dream home appears! Well, everything you do in life is pretty much the same way. It takes Time, Consistency, and Effort (and a prayer when you feel like you can’t go on). Starting is always the hardest thing to do, but you must do it- Today!

I was talking with a friend the other day about the many hats I wear-that as women we all wear.  I told her, “I wish there were a mountain that I could go to the top of and scream and throw a tantrum like a 5-year-old.” To just release all the weight for a moment and then get back to the grind. She literally laugh-out-loud and told me that she understood!  In that moment that was what I need to hear. Sometimes all it takes to make you feel encouraged is to just be hugged, a safe space to release the weight of the world, a good cry or laugh, a listening ear or someone to tell you I understand and you got this! This too shall pass! Look at where you came from and where you are going- you got this girl! You too should create a strong support “team” designated to be honest with you but also to support you along your journey.

Stick with it

It’s so easy to come up with excuses or reasons as to why you can’t continue with your routine. Life is busy and sometimes messy or overloaded, which means you must take time to step back, recharge, prioritize and refocus. Instead of looking at what you feel you can’t do, look at what you can and have done. If you stick with your routines as you go through this new endeavor, you will look back and see all the progress you made because you stuck it out!

With love always,
